February 4, 2026 — As part of Georgia Severe Weather Preparedness Week, Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services emphasized tornado safety awareness on Wednesday, reminding residents that tornadoes can occur anywhere in the state and during any season. While tornado activity is most common from March through May, with April historically the peak month, Georgia averages approximately six tornado days each year, and many tornadoes can be difficult to see due to rain, darkness, or terrain. Officials encouraged residents to understand the difference between a Tornado Watch, when conditions are favorable, and a Tornado Warning, when a tornado has been detected and immediate action is required. Residents are urged to stay informed through multiple alerting sources, know their county for accurate warning tracking, and have a plan in place before severe weather develops. Safety guidance includes moving to the lowest floor of a sturdy building, sheltering in a small interior room away from windows, protecting the head and neck, and avoiding mobile homes during tornado warnings. Bartow County Fire & Emergency Services continues to stress preparedness as the key to reducing injuries and saving lives during severe weather events.
