Shrewsbury, MA — January 18th — When an automobile veered off the road and landed in a resident's front yard, the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts Fire Department was called to the scene. When they arrived, flames were apparent and the operator was not inside the car. The car was completely involved when emergency personnel arrived on the site. The fire was swiftly extinguished by firefighters, but it was rekindled with a loud explosion. A shift in strategy resulted from the vehicle's identification as an electric or hybrid model. To cool the battery system and prevent thermal runaway, crews moved and installed an extra hose line. Before it was safe to extract the vehicle, water was applied for about an hour.
