With temperatures at about twelve degrees with a strong breeze, Paterson firefighters faced a challenging blaze that caused extensive damage to a home on January 31st.
At approximately 9:00 PM, fire u8nits were dispatched to 71 Totowa Ave. Heavy fire on the first floor of a 2 ½ story frame dwelling with heavy smoke throughout was showing on arrival. Two lines were stretched as trucks opened up. Conditions deteriorated as water supply issues became apparent. A second alarm was transmitted as flames spread to the second floor and attic. Members worked on frozen hydrants as additional water supply was established. All companies were withdrawn as fire broke through the roof in the rear.
Ladder 1and 2 tower ladders were set up on the “A” side and Engine 5 operated a deck gun from an adjoining driveway. Flames consumed the roof from the rear to the front of the dwelling. PSE&G was requested due to the fire being gas fed. Adequate water supply was secured and progress on the fire was being made.
Heavy smoke blanketed the front of the structure and ice formed throughout the area. DPW with salt was requested and the North Jersey Fire Canteen set up a tent with heaters and served firefighters as they took a break. Companies remained on the scene for many hours. No serious injuries were reported and the exposure buildings were not damaged. The cause is under investigation.
