Buxton Fire Service Mourns the Loss of Deputy Chief John Kooistra

January 5, 2026 — Buxton Fire-Rescue announced with deep sadness the passing of Deputy Chief John Kooistra, a highly respected leader whose career left a lasting impact on the fire and EMS community.


Deputy Chief Kooistra was known for his professionalism, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to public service. Throughout his career, he influenced countless firefighters and EMS providers through his leadership, guidance, and commitment to excellence.

Buxton Fire-Rescue extended heartfelt condolences to Deputy Chief Kooistra’s family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the Windham and Portland Fire Departments, where he was held in high regard.


His legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will be remembered across the fire service for years to come.
