Athol, MA — February 1 — A suspected carbon monoxide issue at a home prompted the Athol Fire Department to respond. Crews discovered during the inquiry that the home's chimney had several structural flaws that impeded it and prevented adequate venting. Blocked or damaged chimneys can prevent exhaust fumes from safely departing a structure, allowing carbon monoxide to build up within.

Fire authorities emphasized that hazards like as degradation, shifting brickwork, or internal collapse can develop over time and may not be obvious without inspection. Regular maintenance and yearly chimney inspections can help find issues before they cause fires or carbon monoxide accidents. The Athol Fire Department is still urging homeowners to keep their heating systems in good operating order and to make sure all of their homes have carbon monoxide detectors installed.
