January 31,2026 — Firefighters responded to an incident where illegally parked vehicles on both sides of Juniper Street prevented fire apparatus from accessing the roadway.

Due to the obstruction, crews were forced to stage apparatus on Alder and Basswood streets and walk equipment up Juniper Street to reach the scene. Fire officials emphasized that blocked access can significantly delay emergency response, noting that a fire can double in size every 30 seconds.

Lawrence Firefighters Union Local 146 urged residents to be mindful of parking regulations, especially on narrow streets, as blocked access can mean the difference between life and death during an emergency.
