January 28, 2026 — Members of the Westport Fire Department spent Tuesday clearing fire hydrants in the northern portion of town as part of ongoing winter preparedness efforts. Firefighters focused on identifying and clearing hydrants that provide critical coverage along Route 6 and surrounding side streets. While crews are unable to clear every hydrant townwide, officials said the selected locations were strategically mapped to support emergency operations in key areas.
Fire officials noted that much of Westport does not have hydrant coverage. In those areas, firefighters rely on water shuttle operations, transporting water from cleared hydrants or cisterns to fire scenes as needed. Ensuring access to these hydrants is essential to maintaining effective fire protection during winter conditions.
The department is asking residents and business owners to assist by keeping nearby hydrants and cisterns clear of snow and ice.
“If you have a hydrant or cistern near your property, please help us help you by keeping it accessible,” the department said, emphasizing that clear access can make a critical difference during an emergency.
