The Upper Saddle River Fire Department reminded locals on January 29th how crucial it is to keep fire hydrants open in the winter. According to data from the fire department, a fire can double in size every 30 seconds, and during an emergency, blocked hydrants can make it more difficult to get water. Residents were instructed to clear a three-foot radius around hydrants, remove snow and ice directly from them, and make a path to the roadway. In order to help firemen obtain water for neighboring properties, a number of hydrants along Upper Saddle River roads have already been evacuated.
