January 27, 2026 — Following the recent winter storm and with more snow possible this season, the Barnstable Fire Department is asking residents and businesses to help keep fire hydrants clear and accessible.
During a fire, seconds matter. Hydrants buried in snow can delay firefighters’ ability to access water quickly, increasing the risk to lives and property. Clearing hydrants after storms is a simple step that can make a critical difference during an emergency.
Residents are encouraged to shovel snow away from hydrants near their homes or businesses, maintain a three-foot clearance around each hydrant, keep a clear path from the street, and avoid piling snow from driveways onto hydrants.
The department thanked the community for its continued support, noting that small acts like this help ensure firefighters can respond safely and efficiently throughout the winter season.
