NORWICH, CT - At 7:53 P.M. on Sunday, January 29th, the Laurel Hill, Norwich and Preston Fire Departments were dispatched to the old Norwich State Hospital property for a structure fire. Dispatch said Mohegan Tribal Car 3 reported a visible header with a glow from the other side of the river. Engine 3 arrived to find a vacant two-and-a-half story wood-frame well involved that was pretty far back off of Route 12. Crews stretched (two) one-and-three-quarter inch hose lines to prevent it from becoming a brush fire. Laurel Hill Tanker 61 and Poquetanuck Tanker 12 nursed Engine 3. The house collapsed shortly after and the debris pile was wet down. American Ambulance performed standby and the Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
