Jan 24, 955am- Fair Lawn Fire Dept. Companies 2,3 and 4 and Fair Lawn Heavy Rescue, Fair Lawn Ambulance Corps and DPW responded to a garbage truck fire on Broadway in Fair Lawn. The driver of the truck was driving on Broadway when he observed flames coming from the top of his vehicle. The truck, owned by Interstate Waste Services was fully loaded with compacted cardboard for recycling. The driver pulled into the vacant parking lot of the closed Boston Market Restaurant and attempted to dump the load. The hydraulics on the truck failed and he was unable to offload. Ladder #2 responded and set up an aerial operation to try to access the fire from above. After approximately one hour, the DPW was called and responded with a front end loader and it was able to raise the rear compactor door of the truck to get to the seat of the fire. The Fair Lawn Ambulance Corps. responded with their "heat wagon" forced air propane heat system and set up a rehab tent for warming as the temperature was hovering around 15 degrees. The extended operation took more than 3 hours to fully extinguish the fire. The trash hauler suffered extensive damage to the body. Interstate Waste Services responded with a loader and a large dumpster to removed the debris strewn in the parking lot. The DPW also responded to salt the area due to excess water. There were no injuries reported.
