January 24, 2026 — As cold winter temperatures continue, the Closter Volunteer Fire Department shared an important safety reminder emphasizing proper space heater use to reduce the risk of residential fires. Fire officials urged residents to keep heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials, plug units directly into wall outlets rather than extension cords, and place heaters on flat, stable surfaces away from high-traffic areas. Additional guidance included never blocking exits, avoiding use near water, inspecting cords for damage, and turning heaters off and unplugging them when leaving a room or going to sleep. The department stressed that following these precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of winter-related fire emergencies and help keep households safe.
