Norwich House Fire

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

At 10:32 pm on Friday, 1/23/26 the East Great Plain and Norwich Fire Departments were dispatched to 476 New London Turnpike for a person repeatedly saying fire with a language barrier. Car 5 arrived at 10:36 with smoke showing from the roof of a wood frame residential dwelling. Battalion 1 arrived shortly after and transmitted the working fire which added Engine 2, Yantic Engine 33, Mohegan Tribal FAST and an American Ambulance.

Engine 3 stretched a 1.75” hose line to the lower level and found active fire in the wall along the chimney. Two members from Truck 1 performed the primary search, while the driver flew the bucket to the roof. Squad A handjacked 5 inch hose from Engine 3 to the hydrant and established the water supply. Ladder 5 stretched a second crosslay from Engine 3 into the upper floor and found fire in the wall and attic.

Engine 2 threw multiple ground ladders while Engine 33 went to the second floor and assisted with opening up. Truck 1 cut the roof as fire was venting from the delta side gable vent. Rescue 5 set up scene lighting and filled air cylinders. Battalion 1 had command and Car 50 had the Charlie sector. Crews battled the fire while the temperature outside was 14 degrees. The Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

Norwich Public Utilities secured the power and Norwich Public Works assisted with a sand truck. Laurel Hill Engine 62 and Taftville Truck 25 covered Norwich Headquarters.
