Residents are being reminded by the Berkeley Heights Fire Department that although bathroom exhaust fans are intended to eliminate moisture, improper maintenance can turn them into a concealed fire threat. Dust and lint may accumulate inside the fan housing over time. The motor may overheat if airflow is restricted. The risk of igniting can be increased by long run times, outdated equipment, or fans left running unattended—often without obvious warning indications. Fire officials advise avoiding prolonged run times and shutting off exhaust fans after use. Unintentionally leaving fans on can be avoided by installing a timed switch. Frequent cleaning with a vacuum or soft brush can also enhance airflow and lessen dust accumulation.
