January 16, 2026 — Just before 4:00 a.m., the Colchester Fire Department, alongside Colchester Rescue Squad and the Colchester Police Department, responded to a reported building fire at 2127 East Road. Due to the home’s location in a non-hydranted area, the incident was upgraded early to include additional tankers and mutual aid resources. Upon arrival, crews encountered smoke coming from an exterior wall of the structure. Firefighters quickly gained access and confirmed a moderate smoke condition on the first floor, with all occupants and pets safely evacuated. Further investigation revealed fire involvement on the exterior of the building, which crews accessed and extinguished promptly, preventing extension into the interior. Overhaul operations were completed, utilities were secured, and the structure was thoroughly checked to ensure no remaining hazards. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Colchester Fire Department thanks its mutual aid partners, including Essex, Winooski, Milton, and VTANG Fire Departments, for their assistance during the early-morning response.
