Residents are reminded by the Roselle Fire Department to use space heaters responsibly, particularly in the winter when heating equipment are used more frequently. Curtains, bedding, furniture, documents, and other combustible items should always be at least three feet away from space heaters. Heaters should never be placed on carpets or rugs because they could topple over or overheat. Instead, they should be placed on a level, hard, and non-flammable surface.

It is recommended to connect heaters straight into a wall outlet. Power strips and extension cords shouldn't be used with space heaters since they can overheat and cause a fire. To lower the risk of electrical shock, electric heaters must also be kept away from water, especially sinks and restrooms. Before going to bed and when not in use, residents are asked to unplug space heaters. Families may stay safe and lower the danger of home fires by taking these easy precautions.
