PORT JERVIS, NY – Firefighters from Port Jervis Fire Department and neighboring Departments were recently given an opportunity to carry out multiple training evolutions in real-life settings in Port Jervis. They were granted permission to train in three Port Jervis houses that are planned for demolition. 

Two of the training drills took place in December of 2025, with PJFD and Sparrowbush Engine Company (both NY) and Matamoras Fire Department (PA). The third took place on January 15, 2026 with PJFD and Westfall Fire Department (PA). Members of all PJFD companies and chiefs, along with members and chiefs of the neighboring companies, were represented at the drills.

PJFD Assistant Chief Christopher Southard, who was responsible for planning and overseeing the third on-site drill, said firefighters were able to work on sharpening various interior and exterior skills and abilities during all three drills. 

Firefighting techniques used during the third drill included VES (Venter Enter Search, victim removal down a ladder – from a window and a balcony, forcible entry, SCBA familiarization, wall breaching, escape procedures, proper ground ladder placement, and aerial ladder placement. 

Additionally, some of the companies took advantage of the January drill time to give newer members time to practice hooking up to hydrants and handling hoses, and other members driving time.

Besides responses to emergency calls throughout each year, volunteer firefighters are required to complete many hours of training and can achieve various levels of certification. Records are maintained for all training and certifications of each firefighter.
