January 9, 2026 — The Wells Fire Department was requested to respond to a secondary motor vehicle accident on Interstate 95 northbound in Wells, approximately a quarter mile south of an earlier crash scene. Earlier in the day, the Ogunquit Fire Department had responded to a minor accident just south of the Wells on-ramp, where no serious injuries were reported. While the Maine State Police were blocking the high-speed lane to protect the vehicle, driver, and emergency crews, a state police cruiser was struck from behind by another vehicle traveling at highway speeds.

Wells Fire Department Engine 3 responded quickly using the Littlefield emergency turnpike access road. Upon arrival, firefighters assessed the scene and worked alongside Wells EMS to care for both occupants involved in the crash. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were declared total losses. The driver of the vehicle that struck the cruiser was transported from the scene with unknown injuries, while the state police officer was evaluated on scene and declined medical treatment. The incident was cleared within approximately one hour of the crash.

Fire officials emphasized the incident as a reminder of the serious risks faced by first responders operating on high-speed roadways and urged motorists to remain alert, slow down, and move over when approaching emergency scenes.
