January 3, 2026 — South Berwick Fire Department marked the start of the new year by reflecting on a productive and demanding 2025, during which firefighters responded to 455 calls for service while continuing to manage the expanding mission of the department behind the scenes.

One of the most significant developments in 2025 was the addition of emergency medical services to the department. In preparation for assuming ambulance service in South Berwick beginning July 1, 2026, the department established an EMS call company consisting of three members, including two paramedics. Two ambulances and the necessary equipment were purchased, and firefighters have been working closely with Maine EMS and surrounding agencies to ensure operations are fully in place in early 2026.

Firefighters also took delivery of a new Engine 1, which had been ordered in 2022. The former Engine 1 has since begun its third chapter of service overseas in Chile, continuing to serve communities beyond South Berwick. In addition, 12 firefighters completed EMT training, positioning the department to have 25 licensed emergency medical providers once the certification process is finalized.

Department officials credited the hard work and dedication of their members, the support of firefighters’ families, and the continued trust of the community for making these accomplishments possible. With significant advancements on the horizon, the South Berwick Fire Department looks ahead to 2026 and extended wishes for a safe and successful new year.
