January 9, 2026 — Ogunquit Fire Department responded during the morning hours to a single-vehicle motor vehicle crash on Interstate 95 at mile marker 18 after a vehicle spun out and struck the median. Fire officials reported that the occupant of the crashed vehicle was not injured.

While crews and law enforcement were operating on scene, a passing vehicle struck a Maine State Trooper who was seated in his cruiser and actively protecting the crash scene. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the trooper remained focused on assisting the driver who struck the cruiser as additional responders arrived to assess both individuals. Fire officials noted that the professionalism and composure displayed by all personnel on scene were exemplary, and fortunately, injuries were reported to be minor.

Chief Osgood expressed concern over the number of motorists observed passing the incident while using cell phones to take photos and videos, emphasizing the danger distracted driving poses to first responders and highway workers. The department urged motorists to remain alert, slow down, move over, and put phones away when approaching emergency scenes, stressing that distracted driving can quickly turn one emergency into another and place lives at risk.
