On December 19, the Hope Volunteer Fire Department reflected on a significant line-of-duty incident that occurred 17 years ago involving its now-retired Rescue Engine 38-62. Rescue Engine 38-62 was hit by a passing car while it was defending firefighters working at a car collision on Route 80. A New Jersey State Police car was also struck in the same event. On the site, a number of first responders were hurt. According to department authorities, by protecting workers at the crash scene, Engine 38-62's blocking posture probably saved more serious injuries.

The incident continues to serve as a potent reminder of the risks that responders encounter when driving. "Slow Down and Move Over" is a crucial action that drivers must take to assist safeguard emergency responders and anybody working along active streets, according to the Hope Volunteer Fire Department.
