January 5, 2026— The Gorham Fire Department extended condolences to the Windham Fire Department and the Portland Fire Department following the passing of Deputy Chief John Kooistra. Kooistra retired from the Portland Fire Department with the rank of Lieutenant after an accomplished 28-year career and later joined the Windham Fire Department in 2019 as Deputy Chief of EMS.
Known throughout Maine as a passionate educator and advocate for advancing emergency medical services, Deputy Chief Kooistra taught and mentored countless medical providers across the region, including members of the Gorham Fire Department. Colleagues remembered him as a kind, humble, and highly respected professional and mutual aid partner. After a courageous battle with cancer, his loss is deeply felt across the fire and EMS community.
