Following several responses to burst pipe incidents during recent frigid conditions, the Attleboro Fire Department is recommending locals and business owners to take preventative measures. Crews responded to multiple complaints regarding frozen and ruptured pipes, including fire sprinkler systems, on Sunday, December 28. Numerous occurrences, including two commercial properties where sprinkler piping broke, took place in unheated or insufficiently heated parts of buildings. These circumstances may momentarily affect fire safety systems and result in substantial water damage.

During cold weather, the agency advises property owners to take preventative measures, such as blocking drafts, insulating exposed pipes, keeping constant indoor heat, and making sure all rooms with plumbing are sufficiently heated. Freezing can also be avoided by disconnecting outdoor hoses, turning off external water sources when feasible, and letting taps drip a little in extremely cold weather. Businesses are advised to make sure their heating and sprinkler systems are operating correctly on a regular basis.

Residents should refrain from thawing pipes over open flames if they are suspected of being frozen. Use caution while using warm air from hair dryers, heat tape, or approved heating devices. If a pipe bursts, water supply should be turned off right away, and the fire department and the fire protection firm should be notified of the impacted sprinkler systems. If flooding poses an urgent risk or interferes with electrical systems, dial 911. According to the Attleboro Fire Department, a lot of pipe failures happen when temperatures rise over 32 degrees after extended freezing. By acting now, property can be protected and emergencies can be avoided.
