PASSAIC, NJ - Two firefighters were injured and at least 17 tenants were displaced by a blaze in Passaic in the afternoon of January 10th.
Members of Truck Co. 1 were returning from a follow-up check of another fire the day before on Hope Avenue when they saw smoke coming from the rear of the Quincy Street building around 1:15 p.m. A box was struck for 46 Quincy Ave., reporting a fire, which apparently began on the second floor and was extending to the upper floor.
Flames had run up the walls from the second floor to the top floor and cockloft by the time additional companies arrived, and a second alarm was struck. As conditions started to worsen a third alarm was transmitted, bringing additional mutual aid companies to the scene. Labor-intensive inside work by firefighters began to help get an upper hand on the blaze. Ceilings and walls had to be checked for further fire extension.
The fire was placed under control in an hour and a half. One firefighter sustained a shoulder injury and another firefighter suffered a back injury. Both were treated at St. Mary's General Hospital in Passaic and released, fire officials said. All residents got out safely and without injury.
Mutual aid companies from Paterson, Clifton, Carlstadt, East Rutherford, Garfield, Rutherford and Wallington assisted on the scene while the North Jersey Fire Canteen Unit also responded for rehab operations.
