Jan. 4, 2026 — As the new year begins, the Pownal Fire Department is encouraging residents to consider volunteering as part of their 2026 New Year’s resolution. Department leaders say many people assume they are too busy, too old, or lack the experience to help, but opportunities exist for nearly everyone willing to serve.
The department offers a wide range of volunteer roles beyond firefighting, including support staff, fundraising, fire and police assistance, and truck engineer positions. Training and meetings are held just one night a week—Monday evenings at 7 p.m.—making it possible to contribute while balancing work, family, and other commitments.
Fire officials emphasize that volunteers are the backbone of the department and play a critical role in protecting the community year-round, especially during winter months when call volume can increase. Residents interested in learning more are encouraged to stop by the station, meet members, and explore how their skills and time can make a difference.
The Pownal Fire Department is located at 253 Vermont Route 346, with meetings held Mondays at 7 p.m.
