ELSMERE, NY - A driver was arrested after a crash in Elsmere that ejected one of their passengers from the vehicle in early December.
Town of Bethlehem dispatchers received numerous 911 calls for a single-vehicle crash with multiple passengers screaming for help in the area of Oakwood Road and Dumbarton Drive in Elsmere around 10:40 P.M. on Saturday, December 9, 2023.
Elsmere Fire, Delmar-Bethlehem EMS, Albany County Paramedics and Bethlehem Police responded to the scene. Bethlehem Police said they discovered a single-vehicle rollover that was off the road, with one passenger ejected from the vehicle.
“The investigation indicated that the vehicle struck a cement culvert, went airborne, struck several trees and brush, went through a fence, rotated 180-degrees and rolled over before coming to a rest,” Bethlehem Police said in a statement.
One passenger was ejected, however, there was no entrapment within the vehicle.
The Elsmere Fire Department assisted with securing the vehicle, providing lighting and closing the road during the incident.
Bethlehem Police said the driver of the vehicle was interviewed by officers on scene and admitted to driving too fast and consuming alcohol prior to driving.
“Officers on scene conducted a DWI investigation and arrested the operator for DWI,” police said. “Following their arrest, the operator did state they had injuries sustained in the crash and was transported from the scene for medical care.”
Police say the passenger that was ejected was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two additional passengers were also transported to the hospital for minor injuries and evaluation.
The driver was arrested and charged with DWI and multiple vehicle and traffic offenses regarding the crash, police said.
