January 1, 2026 – A Snow Squall Warning was issued by the National Weather Service Binghamton at 1:53 a.m. on January 1 and remained in effect until 2:45 a.m. The warning covered much of northeast Pennsylvania, including Luzerne, Lackawanna, Wyoming, Susquehanna, Pike, and Wayne counties, as well as portions of central New York. At 1:52 a.m., forecasters reported a dangerous snow squall stretching from Hancock, New York, to near Fleetville and Ricketts Glen State Park, moving southeast at approximately 35 mph. The squall was expected to produce intense bursts of heavy snow accompanied by gusty winds up to 35 mph, causing blowing snow and rapidly reduced visibility. Officials warned that travel conditions could become difficult and potentially dangerous within minutes, urging motorists to reduce speed, turn on headlights, and remain alert for sudden whiteout conditions across impacted areas including Nanticoke, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and surrounding communities.
