Before 8:30 a.m. on December 28th, fire and emergency medical services from Station 17 of the R.W. & Broad Top Fire Company responded to an internal investigation at the Broad Top Family Dollar store. In addition to Engine 17 and Ambulance 17-01, Chief 17 and Safety Officer 17-1 made a direct response. When workers arrived, they confirmed that the building had a strong gas odor. An investigation revealed that a broken heating unit was probably the source of the stink.
The business was shuttered until a qualified technician could finish the repairs, and the gas supply was cut off. Personnel from Engine 17 ventilated the building to remove any leftover odors. Command 17 put the box back into service when it was determined that the conditions were safe. During the event, no injuries were recorded.
