A raging fire broke out at a construction and flooring materials warehouse in Roselle Park on January 1st.
Companies arrived after being dispatched to a smell of smoke in the area just before 5pm. and discovered a fire at Crossfield Products at 140 Valley Road. A quick second alarm was struck then greater alarms there after which would eventually go to a 6th alarm. The fire would extend to a exposure building a one commercial occupancy on the Bravo side but that fire was quickly knocked down.
Heavy fire would take possession of the building as numerous outside lines and master streams went into operation. Due to numerous chemicals involved the Union County Haz Mat team was brought in. As fire consumed the building a severe ember condition over the neighborhood had firefighters on brand patrol to make sure no roofs of any homes or other buildings were on fire. The roof eventually collapsed causing the outer walls to crack and become compromised. A sever icy condition formed on the fire ground as temperatures were in the low 20's
"Several explosions in the beginning from the propane tanks occurred, resins, so oils and other chemicals were involved," Joseph Signorello, Jr, Roselle Park Mayor, said.
Mayor also stated said firefighters could not immediately enter the burning building because of the danger of the chemicals and fire conditions. He said a transformer blew and caused about 500 customers to lose power. Fire officials reported no injuries.
