As the usage of oil, gas, and kerosene heaters increases in homes around Fulton County due to the lower temperatures, the McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Company is presenting its Fire Safety Tip of the Month.

Residents are reminded by fire authorities that space heaters must be authorized for indoor use and should be maintained at least three feet away from anything that might catch fire. Heaters should always be placed on a flat, stable surface and turned off before going to bed or leaving the house. Working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are critical when using any fuel-burning appliance.

Residents are advised by the agency not to keep fuel within living areas, refill heaters while they are hot, use outside heaters indoors, or leave heaters unattended. Residents are advised to dial 911 right away if they smell gas or see anything strange. Fire authorities emphasize the significance of being composed, leaving the area, staying outside, and dialing 911 in the case of a fire or heating problem. Throughout the winter, these easy procedures may help keep homes safe and comfortable.
