Deep River Firefighters Train in Smoke House With Three-Team Drill

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Deep River, Conn. — October 29, 2026 — The Deep River Fire Department conducted a smoke house training drill using the Old Saybrook Fire Department's facility, practicing tasks simulating a structure fire.

The department divided members into three teams: rapid intervention, fire attack, and search and rescue. Firefighters practiced operating in a smoke-filled environment, with each team working on its assigned role.

Rescuing lost, trapped, or injured firefighters during an incident is the main focus of the rapid intervention team, often called RIT. The attack unit trains in fire suppression, while the rescue team searches for and helps occupants inside a building.
