Buskirk, N.Y. — October 26 — Members of the Buskirk Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening participating in hands-on training focused on basic drafting and water supply operations.

During the drill, firefighters reviewed procedures for pumping and practiced setting up a water supply through drafting operations. The training allowed them to work with department equipment while reviewing the steps needed to move water from an external source into fire apparatus for use in suppression efforts.

Drafting is a crucial skill for rural fire departments, especially when responding to incidents in areas without access to municipal hydrants. Firefighters must understand how to establish a reliable water source, operate pumps, and maintain a steady water flow during an emergency.

The department's training also gave members the chance to review equipment operation, reinforce basic procedures, and stay familiar with the tasks required during fireground operations.

The Buskirk Volunteer Fire Department serves the surrounding community from its station at 2217 Buskirk-West Hoosick Road in Buskirk. As an all-volunteer department, it responds to a variety of emergencies, including structure fires, vehicle incidents, and brush fires.

Regular pumping and water supply drills help ensure the department remains operationally ready and prepared to work effectively when water supply becomes a critical part of an emergency response.
