West Sand Lake, N.Y. — October 21 — Members of the Best-Luther Fire Department participated in a joint training session with the West Sand Lake Firefighters, focusing on water supply techniques such as drafting and the use of portable ponds.
During the training, the firefighters learned how to draw water from a portable pond and ensure a consistent water supply during fire operations. West Sand Lake Assistant Chief D.Hogle provided instruction on utilizing several portable ponds to support large-scale incidents that require significant amounts of water.
Chief C. Milkiewicz also showed how to convert Best-Luther's Tanker-3 into a portable pond. The tanker, acquired in 2021, has a water capacity of 3,000 gallons and a pump capable of delivering 2,000 gallons per minute, making it a key asset for the department's water supply operations.
Drafting and using portable ponds are important skills for fire departments operating in areas where fire hydrants are not available or are limited. Having multiple ponds allows crews to keep water flowing while tankers move water between supply locations and the fire scene.
The joint exercise allowed firefighters from both departments to practice setting up equipment, operating pumps, and coordinating water supply efforts.
The departments are continuing their mutual aid training to enhance preparedness and improve collaboration for future emergency situations.
