Hyde Park, N.Y. — October 7 — Firefighters from the Hyde Park Fire Department visited the Pre-K classroom at Abilities First at Hyde Park Elementary School to teach students about basic fire safety and introduce them to the equipment used by firefighters.

During the classroom session, the firefighters explained their protective gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which helps them breathe safely in dangerous environments. They also discussed when to call 911, the importance of choosing a family meeting spot outside the home, and how to crawl low under smoke when escaping a fire.

The visit provided students with an opportunity to learn about emergency procedures and become more familiar with the equipment used during fire responses. Fire safety education at an early age helps children recognize important safety steps and understand what to do when a fire alarm sounds.

After the classroom session, the children went outside to see the fire trucks up close. The visit allowed them to observe the equipment firefighters use to respond to emergencies and learn more about the department’s role in the community.

This educational visit supported fire prevention efforts by reinforcing key safety messages for young children.

The U.S.Fire Administration also suggests teaching children to leave a burning building, stay outside, and meet family members at a planned location.

School visits remain an important way for fire departments to connect with residents, introduce children to the fire service, and encourage safer practices at home.
