Richburg, N.Y. — October 10 — Members of the Bolivar Fire Department participated in a controlled burn on Main Street in Richburg, providing valuable training while helping to remove a deteriorated structure that had fallen into disrepair.
The operation offered firefighters a chance to gain hands-on experience, exchange knowledge, and collaborate with neighboring agencies during a planned fire exercise. Controlled burns of structures can be an effective training tool when properly authorized and managed, allowing firefighters to study fire behavior and practice emergency response techniques in a controlled setting.
The initiative also contributed to community safety by eliminating an unsafe, neglected building. These types of projects require careful planning and coordination to ensure the safety of firefighters, nearby properties, and the public.
New York State regulations establish requirements for fire training involving acquired structures. These include removing hazardous materials that could emit toxic smoke and maintaining a minimum distance of 300 feet from other occupied buildings. Federal Environmental Protection Agency guidelines also emphasize checking for applicable asbestos regulations and notifying the relevant authorities before a structure is burned.
The Bolivar Fire Department, located at 460 Main Street in Bolivar, worked with other local fire agencies during the October 10 event. This operation demonstrated how planned training activities can help firefighters maintain their skills while supporting local efforts to address deteriorated properties.
