Wellsville, N.Y. — October 6 — The Wellsville NY Volunteer Fire Department kicked off its first fire prevention demonstration of the season by visiting Wellsville Montessori School, where five firefighters interacted with 19 students and five teachers.

Inside the classroom, the firefighters shared fundamental fire safety tips, teaching children what actions they can take to stay safe during an emergency.

The goal of the visit was to help students become more familiar with fire safety practices and understand the vital role firefighters play in protecting their community.

The demonstration moved outside, where students and staff had the chance to explore Wellsville 1, Wellsville 2, and Wellsville 3. They were able to view the fire apparatus, ask questions, and learn about the tools firefighters use during emergency responses.

School visits offer fire departments a great opportunity to share safety information in an environment that’s engaging for young learners. The National Fire Protection Association provides educational materials designed to help children understand fire risks, recognize smoke alarms, and learn how to create a home escape plan.

Educating children about fire safety at an early age can help them react more effectively during an emergency. Firefighters also use these visits to build trust with the community and encourage children to follow instructions rather than hide when emergency responders arrive.

The Wellsville Fire Department expressed gratitude to the school community for participating in the presentation and planned to share more photos from the visit once they were available.
