Selkirk, N.Y. — October 22 — Members of the Selkirk Fire Department visited A.W.Becker Elementary School to provide a fire prevention presentation aimed at teaching students about fire safety and explaining the role of firefighters during emergencies.
This visit allowed students to meet firefighters, learn about their protective gear, and become more familiar with the individuals who respond to fire calls. Two firefighters also participated in a gear-donning race, demonstrating how quickly crews prepare for emergency assignments.
Later, students had the chance to view the department’s fire apparatus and learn more about the equipment used during emergency responses. Meadow, the school’s therapy dog, also joined in welcoming the visitors.
Helping children recognize firefighters in full protective gear can help reduce fear during emergencies and make it easier for them to follow instructions. School visits also offer a great opportunity to share basic fire safety messages in a setting where children can ask questions and take part in hands-on demonstrations.
The National Fire Protection Association supports age-appropriate fire and life safety education, including activities that help children understand fire risks and practice safe actions.
The Selkirk Fire Department expressed gratitude to the staff and students of A.W. Becker Elementary for their warm welcome. The visit highlighted the importance of community outreach in promoting fire safety awareness and strengthening the connection between firefighters and local families.
