Selkirk, N.Y. — October 21 — Members of the Selkirk Fire Department participated in hands-on training focused on ladder operations, ventilation, interior wall breaching, and ceiling removal using a house owned by the Bethlehem Public Library, which was set for demolition.

The training allowed firefighters to practice essential skills used during structural fire responses. The department expressed gratitude to the library for making the property available for this training prior to its demolition.

During the session, firefighters practiced ladder placement and operations, which are critical for reaching elevated areas, providing access for rescue, and maintaining alternate escape routes. They also engaged in ventilation exercises, requiring careful coordination to manage airflow and smoke control during fire incidents.

Interior wall breaching provided hands-on experience in creating access through building materials when standard entry points are blocked. Ceiling removal training involved using hooks and poles to expose concealed spaces where fire might spread unnoticed.

These skills are essential components of structural firefighting training. New York State firefighter training standards include ladder operations, ventilation, teamwork, and checking concealed spaces for hidden fire.

Training in a building slated for demolition allowed firefighters to work with common construction materials and practice tool use in a controlled environment. The session highlighted the importance of regular, practical training in preparing firefighters for the dynamic conditions encountered during emergency incidents.
