Selkirk, N.Y. — October 20 — Members of the Selkirk Fire Department went to Glenmont Elementary School to give their yearly fire prevention talk, allowing students to learn about fire safety and how to respond in emergencies.

During their visit, firefighters explained their duties and showed the students the gear they wear during emergency calls. The presentation was designed to help children become more familiar with firefighters and understand what to expect when emergency services arrive.

Being able to recognize firefighters in their full protective gear can help reduce fear during an emergency, allowing children to focus better on safety instructions. The visit also gave students the chance to learn about the steps they should take during a fire, such as leaving the building when told, staying outside, and notifying an adult if there is an emergency.

Students also had the opportunity to see the fire truck used by the department and learn about the tools and equipment firefighters use when responding to emergencies.

School visits are an important part of fire prevention efforts, as they bring safety information directly to young people.

The National Fire Protection Association provides educational resources that encourage families to plan and practice escape routes from their homes, identify at least two ways to exit each room, and choose a safe outdoor meeting place.

The Selkirk Fire Department’s visit included both fire safety education and direct interaction with students, helping them develop a better understanding of emergency procedures and the important work done by local firefighters.
