Avalon, N.J. — September 28 — Members of the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department kicked off their fall training schedule with a focus on vehicle crashes and rollover incidents. Firefighters used scrap municipal vehicles to practice responding to overturned vehicles.

The hands-on drill gave members the chance to work with real vehicles and review the steps involved in handling crash scenes. Vehicle rollover incidents can create added challenges for rescuers, including vehicle instability, limited access to occupants, and the need to control hazards before starting rescue operations.

Training on damaged vehicles helps firefighters practice scene assessment, vehicle stabilization, and safe access to patients.

These skills can support coordinated rescue efforts when crews respond to motor vehicle crashes on local roads.

The department conducts drills every Monday to help members develop new skills and reinforce established practices.

Regular training allows firefighters to review procedures, work with equipment, and build teamwork before responding to emergencies.

The National Fire Protection Association identifies technical rescue and vehicle-related emergencies as areas where appropriate training and safe operating procedures are essential for emergency responders.
