Wildwood, N.J. — October 10 — The City of Wildwood Fire Department spent the week interacting with students from Glenwood Avenue Elementary School, teaching fire prevention lessons and helping young students learn about the importance of staying safe around fire.

The visit focused on fire safety practices that families should follow all year round, not just during October’s Fire Prevention Month. Students were reminded that knowing what to do during a fire can help them respond quickly and safely.

According to guidance from the U.S. Fire Administration, families should test smoke alarms every month and replace batteries when needed. Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of a home, both inside and outside sleeping areas. Alarms should also be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Families were also encouraged to create and practice a home fire escape plan. Each room should have two possible exits, and everyone should know the outdoor meeting place. Children should practice the plan with adults and understand that they must stay outside once they escape.

The school visit supported the department’s ongoing community fire prevention efforts. The City of Wildwood Fire Department operates both career and volunteer divisions and provides fire protection and emergency response services.

The department encouraged families to continue practicing fire safety throughout the year.
