Standish, ME - First responders from Standish Fire-EMS visited Edna Libby Elementary School to deliver hands-on fire prevention education, transforming potentially frightening emergency scenarios into practical, confident life-safety skills for local students.

The interactive visit took place on Monday, October 19, 2026, as part of National Fire Prevention Week activities within the Cumberland County school district.

Firefighters engaged with young learners to break down critical emergency procedures into clear, accessible action steps, focusing on recognizing the sound of smoke detectors and practicing multi-route home evacuation plans with their families.

Personnel also demonstrated their structural turnout gear and breathing apparatus, helping children understand that beneath the bulky helmets and protective equipment are approachable local community helpers ready to assist in an emergency.

Department leaders emphasized that teaching safety fundamentals early equips young students to act calmly during an incident while empowering them to serve as active fire prevention advocates within their own households.
