Pleasantville, N.J. — October 6 — Members of the Pleasantville Fire Department visited North Main Street Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week to educate students and staff on fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Firefighters shared important information with the students about the need to keep smoke alarms working, creating a home fire escape plan, and knowing at least two ways to exit each room. The session provided students with useful knowledge they could pass on to their families and apply in case of a fire emergency.

As part of the visit, students observed a firefighter donning full turnout gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

This demonstration helped students better understand how firefighters appear and sound while wearing protective equipment, which can help reduce the likelihood that children might hide from responders during an actual emergency.

Sparky the Fire Dog also participated in the presentation and received a warm reaction from the students.

The fire department expressed gratitude to the school’s administration, teachers, and staff for their support in making the visit successful and for helping to spread fire safety education within the school community.

The National Fire Protection Association suggests installing smoke alarms in bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of a home. It also recommends testing alarms monthly and practicing escape plans twice a year.

The visit highlighted the importance of public education in helping children recognize firefighters and learn how to react safely in the event of a fire.
