Durham Firefighter Andrew Brokes, 24, Dies in Line of Duty

Westfield Fire Department joined Durham Fire Department in mourning the line-of -duty death of firefighter Andrew Brokes, who died after a structure fire building collapse. 

Brokes collaborated with the City of Durham Fire Department on October 8 while searching for possible victims inside a burning multi-story building. Part of the roof fell, leading to the second floor falling too. Brokes sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the location. Another two firefighters sustained injuries and were hospitalized for treatment. Their injuries were reported as non-life -threatening 

In May 2025, Brokes started with the Durham Fire Department and was placed at Fire Station 13, Tower Company 5. Even though his tenure with the department was brief, he had already become an integral part of the team serving the Durham community. 

The Westfield Fire Department offered condolences to Brokes’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters. The department also expressed hope for a full and rapid recovery for the two injured firefighters.
