Mays Landing, N.J. — October 14 — Members of Laureldale Fire Rescue visited the Atlantic County Fire Academy to participate in hands-on live fire training that focused on structure fire operations, building construction, and firefighter safety.
Under the guidance of instructors Cahill, Moran, and Wilkinson, firefighters engaged in controlled live fire exercises aimed at improving their fire attack techniques, hose advancement, communication, and coordination during crew operations.
A significant part of the session concentrated on residential and commercial building construction. Firefighters reviewed the differences between older homes, conventional construction methods, and modern lightweight building systems. They also explored how various building materials, roof systems, open floor layouts, and fire loads could influence fire spread and the stability of structures.
The training emphasized the importance of understanding different construction types within the department’s first-due response area. Identifying potential hazards before and during an incident enables crews to make better-informed decisions regarding entry, fire attack, and firefighter safety.
The Atlantic County Fire Academy conducted the training at the Anthony “Tony” Canale Fire Training Center in Egg Harbor Township, which provided the necessary facilities for practical fire service training.
The National Fire Protection Association’s 2026 NFPA 1400 standard outlines requirements for safe and effective fire service training, including live fire exercises and training facility standards. This session allowed Laureldale’s volunteer firefighters to maintain and enhance their skills, ensuring they are better prepared for emergencies within the community.
