Mays Landing, N.J. — October 1 — Members of the Laureldale Fire Rescue team visited Shaner School alongside the Mays Landing Fire Department, Cologne Volunteer Fire Company, and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service to provide students with fire safety education as part of the beginning of Fire Prevention Month.
The event aimed to help students learn how to react during a fire and avoid emergencies at home and in outdoor settings.
Firefighters explained the importance of having working smoke alarms, knowing two escape routes from each room, keeping exits clear, and selecting a safe outdoor meeting spot. Students were also reminded to leave a burning building right away, stay outside, and call 911 once they were safe.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoke alarms should be installed inside bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of a home.
It also advises families to practice escape plans twice a year and ensure everyone knows where to meet outside.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service also provided information on wildfire prevention. Students were taught that matches and lighters should never be treated as toys, campfires must be completely put out, and cigarettes should never be thrown away near dry leaves or vegetation. State officials have emphasized that most wildfires in New Jersey are caused by human activity.
The school visit showcased the importance of collaboration between local fire departments and state agencies in promoting safety education. Fire Prevention Week was scheduled for October 4–10, 2026, while fire prevention remains a priority throughout the year.
