Boston, MA — October 7 — Firefighters from Massport Fire-Rescue continued their 40-hour Confined Space Rescue Technician certification program on the third day of training, focusing on the skills necessary to handle complex rescue situations in confined spaces.

The training, backed by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), was structured to prepare emergency personnel to recognize hazards, use specialized rescue equipment, and conduct operations while ensuring the safety of both rescuers and victims.

The IAFF’s five-day confined space rescue course included classroom sessions and hands-on exercises that covered confined space regulations, personal protective equipment, atmospheric monitoring, ventilation techniques, and victim retrieval systems.

The program also included content on pre-incident planning and rescue procedures for hazardous environments.

These skills are crucial when responding to emergencies in areas such as tanks, utility vaults, and other enclosed spaces where restricted access, poor air quality, or other dangers can make rescue efforts more challenging.

Upon completing the program and passing the required evaluations, participating firefighters were eligible for nationally recognized Pro Board-accredited Confined Space Technician certification through the IAFF.

IAFF Local S-2 continued to support advanced training and professional development to enhance Massport Fire-Rescue’s technical rescue abilities.

The program also emphasized the value of practical skills, safety protocols, and coordinated operations during specialized emergency responses.

The training was conducted to maintain the readiness of firefighters serving the Massachusetts Port Authority.
