West Greenwich, R.I. — October 13 — Members of the West Greenwich Volunteer Fire Company No.1 conducted a technical vehicle stabilization drill that involved two overturned vehicles stacked on top of each other. The exercise was designed to test the team's ability to evaluate a complex situation, create an effective plan, communicate clearly, and work together as a unit.
During the scenario, firefighters first secured both vehicles using stabilization techniques before proceeding with the extrication process. Once the vehicles were safely held in place, the team successfully removed the doors from the lower vehicle, completing the planned task.
The company also announced the addition of a second set of Rescue 42 stabilization struts to Engine 21. This upgrade ensures that both engines are equipped with stabilization tools, offering crews more options when responding to incidents involving overturned or unstable vehicles.
Rescue 42 struts are specifically designed to keep vehicles stationary during rescue operations. Stabilization is a critical step before using cutting tools or removing vehicle doors, as any unexpected movement can pose serious risks to both rescuers and injured individuals. The manufacturer emphasizes the importance of proper training for personnel to use this equipment effectively.
West Greenwich Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 offers vehicle extraction and other emergency services within the community. Consistent hands-on training allows members to maintain and refine their technical skills, enhance coordination, and be better prepared to handle difficult rescue situations safely.
