Westerly, R.I. — October 6 — Volunteers from the Westerly Fire Department participated in swift water rescue training on the Pawcatuck River on Tuesday, October 6, to enhance their ability to handle water-related emergencies.

The training session involved hands-on activities such as throw-bag drills, tethered swimmer rescues, and boat operations.

Firefighters practiced methods for reaching and helping individuals who were injured, stranded, or unable to reach safety, including swimmers and kayakers.

Firefighters also trained with newly obtained rescue gear, such as dry suits, safety helmets, personal flotation devices, rope bags, and specialized footwear.

This exercise gave them the opportunity to become familiar with the equipment and exchange techniques learned during recent Swift Water Rescue certifications.

The department had previously conducted river rescue training with the Pawcatuck Fire Department, including an eight-hour course that combined classroom lessons with practical exercises.

That training emphasized the importance of reviewing rescue techniques and preparing for scenarios that crews might encounter in local waterways.

Throw bags, flotation devices, ropes, and appropriate protective gear are essential components of water rescue operations.

Consistent practice helps responders improve their ability to handle equipment, work together, and make quick decisions during incidents in moving water.

The training on October 6 supported the Westerly Fire Department’s continued commitment to maintaining readiness and delivering a reliable response to water emergencies in the community.
