Wakefield, R.I. — September 29 — Students who are taking the firefighting class at South Kingstown High School visited the Union Fire District of South Kingstown’s training facility as they continued to prepare for careers in the fire service.

The students were working on their medical training before moving on to practical firefighting skills. This visit helped them become more familiar with the district’s training environment as they prepared for the next part of the program.

This class was part of a partnership between South Kingstown High School and the Union Fire District, aimed at introducing students to firefighting and helping them get ready for future service. The program included both classroom lessons and hands-on skills needed during emergency situations.

According to the school district’s program information, students were working toward training in Firefighter I and hazardous materials. The curriculum also covered emergency vehicle operations, fire behavior, building construction, hose lines, ladder operations, self-contained breathing apparatus, communications, water supply, and fire prevention.

Medical instruction was a key part of the preparation. Students also received training in areas such as CPR, first aid, and the use of automated external defibrillators, which helped them build a strong foundation for responding to emergencies.

The Union Fire District’s program offered students a way to gain real-world experience and learn about the duties of volunteer firefighters. The students were expected to keep developing their skills as they moved toward hands-on firefighting exercises.
